A Differential Microbiological Assay

Although vitamin B12 can be assayed biologically with mice, chicks or rats, the microbiological method of assay is preferred since it is more rapid and economical. One serious shortcoming of many microbiological B12 assay procedures is the lack of specificity when crude materials are assayed. Crude materials can contain inhibitory or stimulatory factors which cause serious errors in assay resul...

A rapid microbiological procedure using Bacillus stearothermophilus for the assay of antibacterial drugs.

objective is to explore cell deformability as a physical characteristic in its own right, techniques using cells resuspended in artificial media (Gregersen et al, 1967; Weed et al, 1969; Forman et al, 1973; SchmidSchdnbein et al, 1973) or packed cell preparations (Jacobs, 1963; Dintenfass, 1965) can yield valuable information. However, as the physical properties of the red cells are almost cert...

A microbiological procedure for the assay of amino acids with Clostridium perfringens (welchii) BP6K.

In the previous paper on the growth requirements of Clostridium perfringens BPGK it was shown that thirteen amino acids, i.e. arginine, leucine, histidine, isoleucine, methionine, t,hreonine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, valine, glutamic acid, serine, cystine, and tyrosine, are essential for the growth of the organism. The omission of any one of these amino acids from an otherwise complete medium...

A Microbiological Assay Method for Thiamine

It is generally recognized that the most useful and convenient means of quantitatively determining members of the vitamin B complex involve microbiological methods. Several methods of this type have been proposed for the assay of thiamine but each one in use today possesses certain inherent disadvantages that limit its value. The fermentation method of Schultz, Atkin, and Frey (1,2), based on t...

Chartreusin: production and microbiological assay.

Chartreusin was produced in the fermentation liquors of Streptomyces chartreusis at peak concentrations of 200 to 300 mug/ml. The titers could be increased by 200 to 300% or more by incorporating d-fucose, a part of the chartreusin molecule, into the fermentation media. A microbiological assay with Sarcina lutea could detect concentrations of the drug of 0.5 to 1.0 mug/ml.
